Developing new biomarkers for the diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular disease

Thanks to recent advances, researchers have identified a new receptor that facilitates the uncontrolled accumulation of cholesterol on the walls of blood vessels and in the heart. This receptor is considered to be a potential therapeutic target in atherosclerosis and cardiomyopathy. To that end, new drugs are being developed which specifically attack and block the activity of this receptor. Furthermore, new identifiers or biomarkers which are being tested in blood facilitate the detection (and therefore the prevention) of this cholesterol accumulation process in patients with cardiovascular disease.
