Macrophages and renal regeneration: fact or science fiction?

The kidney was thought to be an organ that had no regenerative capabilities. However, in recent years this dogma has been challenged, and there is now speculation that the human kidney can regenerate in certain situations, though the mechanisms of renal regeneration remain unknown. Could we hope to obtain a regenerative cell therapy capable of dealing with renal diseases?
