This essay, focuses on some general questions related to the present university, its origins and what the author calls its downfall especially in social sciences and humanities. According to him, it has become a self-poetic academic professionalism with no relation with the society problems.

The authors talks from his point of view, based on his experiences in the United States adding provoking comparisons with the situation of those disciplines in Spain.
