Oral Literatures and New Communication Spaces in the Mediterranean

It was published for the International Symposium on "Oral Literatures and New Communication Spaces In the Mediterranean", held on March 1st. and 2nd., 2002 at the Residence for Researchers, organised by the Instituto Europeo Mediterraneo and the Residence for Researchers CSIC-Generalitat de Catalunya, also supported by Catalunya Ràdio and TV3.

Is there any common imaginary in the intercultural Mediterranean society? Are there shared visions? Is ambiguity, even rejection, the core of their speech? What Is really true and nobody doubts is that many traditions we consider deeply "ours" also belong to "others" because of long and permanent contacts, of migrations, trade or by mutual civilizing influence.  
 
If the dispersed traditions from the north of Africa to Istanbul are analysed, from coast to coast in the Mediterranean sea, the surviving
and the real and effective presence of literature and oral tradition can be traced in the literary and audiovisual works.
 
Thus, the symposium is presented as a new conception in the Mediterranean cultural and scientific community, as the proposed topics had never been dealt with before in such wide scope. It should be acknowledged though that, in the past, meetings were held by sectors, writers on the one hand and specialists on the other. Even though, symposiums of these characteristics had never been held, focusing on both coasts of the Mediterranean. The presentation will offer a wide scope of the influence and the presence of popular literature in the literary field or in the real audiovisual production.
